The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
