Government spokespeople warned on mid-September that attempts to validate "blatant hostility" would have serious consequences for Ethiopia and its regional partners and is a "limit that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Defense Preparations on the Ground

So far, there are few indications of significant troop deployments in the border areas between the two countries.

Nonetheless, in the country, government media has broadcast training completions of numerous trainees at different defense facilities.

The head of human resources department of the defense force, the officer, stated recently in an conversation that the defense forces was in a "secure situation" as "many thousands of youths" were entering service, which he said was "a warning to our opponents".

Past Origins of the Conflict

For more than half a century from 1890, Eritrea was administered by colonial powers.

Following World War II, it was then controlled by the British administration before evolving into a integrated region of Ethiopia.

But in 1962 the Ethiopian emperor ended this agreement and the region became completely integrated into the Ethiopian state.

Temporarily in the 1990s, there were good relations between the authorities in Ethiopia's capital and Eritrea's capital, but they fell out over the precise positioning of their common border, causing war in 1998.

Although this finished in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was never fully implemented, and the neighbors continued at in dispute.

This ended in 2018, when Abiy made overtures to Eritrean President the president. The two endorsed a statement that the conflict was finished – a action that gained the Prime Minister the Nobel Peace Prize.
